Stable storage beats complicated storage
Cards hold up best when their environment is predictable. Keep them away from direct sunlight, moisture, large temperature swings, dust, and areas where boxes are likely to be crushed or knocked over. A clean, dry room with consistent conditions is a strong starting point.
Use sleeves and holders that fit the card correctly. Oversized protection allows movement, while an overly tight fit can put pressure on corners and edges. Store protected cards upright or flat in a way that avoids bending and keeps weight distributed evenly.
Prep without overhandling
When preparing a card for grading, handle it by the edges and work on a clean surface. Avoid wiping the surface with household materials or trying to improve the card with aggressive cleaning. Those attempts can leave marks or change the condition you were trying to preserve.
A short inspection checklist is useful: confirm the card identity, review the corners and edges, check the surface under angled light, record any concerns, and return the card to stable protection before moving to the next one.
